Go to : http://geo.craigslist.org/iso/us/nj

Click on your area.

Then under "For Sale" look for "Cars+Trucks"

Browse around for used cars etc and then send some e-mails and make some phone calls.

Good luck!

Car auctions usually do not offer any assurance the car will run.
I would ask friends if the have an old car around that you can buy or ask very carefully of people with ads in the paper. What you will get, if you care careful, is a car that looks awful, with bad seats, needing a paint job, and some rust, but no rust through, with good brakes, an engine that doesn't burn a lot of oil, and a transmission that doesn't need immediate repairs. Get a mechanic to check it out and tell him/her what is important to you.
Selling a car that runs at this price is too often got some risky and expensive repairs, cheap for a guy who works on cars, expensive for everyone else. So you need to sacrifice appearance to get a running car.
Some people have a car left over from a kid or grand parent who went away and left it that they will sell cheap (maybe new tires needed) if they hear you need it.

Well I know around where I live theres small dealerships that sell cheap cars that are used. But also check your local papers. They usually have used cars in there where you can phone them up to have a look at it. There has to be some sort of cars in there for that amount.

LOL..

You might be ripping your hair out AFTER you get the car.. for $500 you're not buying a car you're buying problems. I know you may not have a choice at this point, but AT LEAST be aware of that.

I wouldn't expect a running car for that little... if you know what you're doing you might be able to get something for cheap and then fix it
