I got an 800 watt Panasonic 5-disc DVD , 5:1 Surround sound with Dolby, 5 speakers + sub woofer + 4 speaker stands for about $ 550 Canadian. It sounds better than ones I've heard that cost way more. The price could be down from when I got mine. I really don't think you'd be unhappy with it. The book warns not to place the center speaker on the TV & make sure the two front speakers are at least 4 feet from the end of the TV, or you will get distortion in the sound. Just a tip. Good luck deciding.

Click here for ALL 7 (seven) of the "Panasonic" home-theater-in-box models down at the Circuit City: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Home-Theater-Systems/sem/rpsm/catOid/-12954/N/20012898+20012954+40000460/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do

But you MIGHT consider the "ONKYO" brand for improved sound quality and build design...Click here to see all 5 (five) models at the same store: http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Home-Theater-Systems/sem/rpsm/catOid/-12954/N/20012898+20012954+40001308/link/ref/rpem/ccd/categorylist.do

But you go and LISTEN to them both to see which one YOUR ears prefer...If YOU can't hear a difference, then DON'T spend the extra money.
