Could someone tell me who John Allston was? (easy points) I can't find anything anywhere...?

If it helps any, I know he stated the quotes below:
"If you don't control your mind, someone else will."

"The only thing you take with you when you're gone is what you leave behind."


To me he sounded like a brilliant man, but I can't find out anything relevant about who he was (liberal, conservative, etc).
Am I spelling his name wrong or something? I would really appreciate any information, thanks in advance.

JOHN ALLSTON, died May 1750. He was the son of JOHN ALLSTON, SR. and ELIZABETH. He married DEBORAH SIMONS and had six children.

I can't find a thing either, but this is what I did find. Here is an author from the later half of the 1800's who calls herself Margaret Allston, but her real name was Anna Farquhar. She writes of having a brother named "John Allston." Perhaps she is the real author of these quotes and has attributed them to her "brother," and now people go quoting this "John Allston" who might just be a litterary creation of Margaret Allston "Anna Farquhar." Just a hypothesis. I can't prove it is necessarily this way, but I hope this helps your search.
