You should consider that you may be moving or going off to school and not be there for the entire life of the dog which means that you should also consider what your mother or father would like. 16 year old girls can like lots of different breeds but it sounds like you are narrowing it down to smaller ones. The most important thing when choosing a breed or dog is that it has that special look that makes you love it. Sooner or later it will spit up on the sofa or have an accident on the Persian rug, You should of course train it, but nothing is ever perfect. Therefore you should get the dog that appeals to you most, the one that you will forgive and love anyway you will provide the best and most secure home for. From the toy group bellow you can get to the other groups and look at the breeds.

I recommend going to your local animal shelter and looking at the mid-sized dogs there. You'll find lots of fun-loving, great tempered mutts in an animal shelter.
Before you go, think about what you want in a dog. Remember, they live for 12 years or more, so just because one trait suits you now doesn't mean it's going to in 10 years. Do you want an active dog? Active dogs are lots of fun to play with and take hiking and swimming, but if they don't get lots of exercise everyday, they'll become destructive and hyperactive.
You can get the shelter staff to help you pick out a dog that will match your lifestyle. Some shelter dogs already come housetrained, but most will still need lots of training in order to be well-mannered. Do as much research as you can. Only consider dogs that are friendly and have no aggression problems.

Yorkshire. They are adorable, and little enough to stay indoors. Mine is 15 yrs. old. If you are kind and train the dog properly it will be the most loyal friend you will ever have. Don't let it outside alone but do take it for walks and play ball etc. with it in the yard. Also ShihTzu are good. Both these can be trained to go potty on puppy pads in case they don't want to go out in inclement weather. Always remember that only positive training. NEVER hit, yell, or punish in a cruel way.

I'm 14 and I have at least 5 different animals. If you live in a small place, I'm guessing that a small dog is best. If you're active, a beagle, pomeranian, or yorkshire would be good. Both of those breeds are supposed to be active, loving, and very good to get along with.

So you want a small dog that is easy to handle. First it depends on if you have any other animals like birds of cats, because not all small dogs get along well with them, unless you want to do some extra training. you also have to be aware of the fact that you might go some where like collage, so you would have to go some where that lets you bring your dog. You must have extra time as well to take care of your dog, like letting it out to the bathroom and such. Personaly I would recomend an English Cocker Spaniel.

Happycamper seems well informed with his answer. The only thing I would add would be to go to your local humane society and get your dog from there. You can find some really good ones there.
That's where I come from and my family couldn't be happier.

i could be what i'm now, a good ol' American mixed breed. i could be severe, have a good paintings ethic, and opt to stay in a good working domicile. If I have been saved as basically a puppy in a fenced backyard, i could be digging great holes and barking because of the shear boredom of all of it. i could opt to be taken places, to learn new issues, and to work out people. i could be friendly yet reserved and not aggressive. i could be very unswerving to my loving proprietor and to the my kinfolk. My seem could be popular. No extremes, in line with danger a medium or double coat. very like a flow between a spaniel and a shepherd. coloration black in line with danger brown with somewhat white trim. i could be beautiful to seem at and valuable to touch. i could problaby weight 50-60#.

I have breed chihuahua dogs, they are very easy to look after the short haired ones are best, and you can put them in your bag when you take it out.

Not chihuahua because they bark a lot... but maybe something like a toy poodle or a medium dog like a beagle.
