Pigs are a popular alternative. They're fairly smart and clean. I could also see goats or sheep--I have a friend who raises sheep, and has some she keeps almost as pets--though those would be outdoor pets, I'd think.

But consider /why/ we hae cats and dogs: Dogs are useful for hunting, hurding sheep, and guarding. Cats eat disease-spreading mice and rats. I don't know how well a pig could replace a dog (though Babe apparently did all right). I suspect a mongoose could serve the original function of a cat. Or a skunk. Skunks are okay pets, and they eat mice.

So I'd say dogs become pigs and cats become mongooses, skunks, and other similar animals.

I like you question because I think you are right. If man did not have dogs or cats he would create another pet. Man enjoys pets and whether the Vegan animal rights people think that man has no right to own or use animals as pets or not, does not matter. Man will always have pets!

There is no god, so he/she/it never created anything.

People like dogs because people are social beings and so are dogs. People like cats because they are easier to care for than dogs (can be left alone). Also, they are both relatively intelligent creatures. Plus they are both soft to the touch (hence "pets").

So people could possibly have pigs as pets (think "Babe" and "Charlotte's Web"). Pigs are smart and will eat just about anything. And they won't shed much or jump up on the counter. So I'd say little piggies could make good pets, as long as they were bred to remain fairly small (no bigger than dogs). The pigs aren't so touchable, but I think people could get over that.

Some people like rabbits, but they aren't very smart or interactive. They are, however, very pettable.

God didn't create dogs or cats, they evolved over thousands of years. All dogs come from wolves and all cats come from big cats like tigers and lions.
Man didn't domesticate cats or dogs as household pets, either. Dogs were used to hunt for man and cats were just cats until the Egyptians started to worship them.

Without getting into a religious battle (please respect my beliefs as I respect yours) God didn't create the cuddly kitty on my lap, nor did he create the happy-go-lucky Lab running around my back yard. Man domesticated wild animals and bred them until he got what he wanted out of the wolf, the lion, tiger, whatever.

If you look back on the evolution of mankind as well as wildlife, it might help to explain where our pets came from.
