well...i know but i just can't explain to my friend (who is french) how do i explain this to my friend?

Try demonstrating it to her. Typically in the English language we use "this" for something that is closer in proximity to us (either in distance, order, or possession) "that" is usually reserved for referring to something farther away, the other option, or a difference in possession. For example, "This is my shirt" "That is your shirt" or "I want this one (as you point to it), not that one (the other choice)" Since English is one of the harder languages to learn I would work with her on it by demonstrating using the words appropriately and setting up situations for her to practice

This = ceci
That = cela
This is what you have next or close to you
That refers to the objects located out of reach

"This" tends to be something you have with you. "That" tends to be something that you don't have.
