Near Union Square: Via Emilia on East 21st Street and Park Avenue. Appetizers are unusual and outstanding - gnocco fritto - large platter of Italian coldcuts served with delicious little fritters; tigelle (not served in too many places) hot biscuits with proscuitto and melted cheese; wonderful soups, good pastas, fish is always fresh. Some desserts are outstanding.

In the West Village: Da Andrea on Hudson Street and West 11th Street.
Excellent pastas - I especially love their clam sauce, they, too, make tigelle, can get very crowded on weekends.

They're both very relaxed and very moderately priced.

One of the best places for Pizza and Pasta in the city, is John's pizzeria. There is usually a long line, but the atmosphere is great (unbelievable decorum), and the food is even better. It's a bit expensive, because it's a restaurant, not a pizzeria, but it has the best New York Pizza. The address is 260 W. 44th st. Between First and York. Another great place for pasta, is Carmines, on Amsterdam and 93rd street. The plates are expensive, but they are MASSIVE, and each can feed about 3 people. So take friends out about 8 or so friends, order a few dishes, and have a great time. A less known new place, is La Vela, on Amsterdam, between 77th and 78th street. The food is great, the decorum is pretty good, and the service is fine, while the prices are relatively inexpensive.

There's a little place called Celeste on the Upper West Side (502 Amsterdam Ave, btw 84th & 85th) that I love. Cash only but very cute and good. The owner is there most of the time to oversee that everything is done right.

Well, to start there is of course Little Italy, just walk up and down and look at menus. But, I would say for most NYers Carmines is probably the place to go, but be prepared to wait - one in midtown and one on upper westside.
