Well, every gallon of gasoline produces about 20 pounds of C02 (remember that the oxygen comes from the environment, not the gasoline itself).

So a 12 mpg SUV would create (20 lbs/1 gal)(1 gal/12 miles) pounds per mile, or 1.667 pounds per mile.
