After or during activity he will sometimes stick out his neck, flare nostrils and wheezes as he desperately gasps for air and sometimes hack during the gasp. His stomach flares in and out during each gasp. Since all this started I noticed he has a light wheezing during normal breathing. My vet checked him out after the first couple episodes and was unsure. He wanted me to get it on camera so he could see. Not good enough. Please help!

What did the vet do?Did he listen to his heart and lungs with a stethoscope?Did he take blood for tests?Did he take x-rays of the thoracic cavity? How did he check the dog? Those examinations that I mention are very basic, there should be done immediately. If you think the dog wasn't examined good enough you should take him to another vet.Sounds like a serious problem, could be something with his lungs or his heart, like heart failure.Get him to another vet and ask for blood tests and x-rays now!

Any info you get from the net is NOT good enough...either do as your vet suggested or take your dog to another vet for a second opinion.
This is a problem for a vet to diagnose and treat properly not for people on the internet!!! Plus it is against the law for anyone including a registered vet tech or a licensed vet to diagnose without seeing a pet and doing a hands on exam.

Danes do not have a normal life span of only 7 years. The average life span now is 10 years with many well bred Danes living into their teens. Many great strides by good breeders have greatly increased the life span in the past 10 -15 years.

You are very lucky to have you pet with you for this long. Dane's are not noted to live much after 7 years old.
I think a new vet check is in order. Try to find one that knows Danes or Giant breed dogs better than your's does. Sometimes after exercise an older dog has trouble with their throats, they get too dryed out from the excercise. Try not to worry until you know there is something to worry about. In the mean time find some excerise's that don't put such a strain on an older dog.

Such be true that Great Danes do not live over seven to eight years. Your dog may be asthma old age. Could be suffering from dust be sure hes not swallowing dust balls or dusty wind !

Has he always had heartworm protection during his lifetime? It could be heartworms (in the latter stages). If he has not had a blood test to check for this I would ask for him to be tested.
