Do your dog a favor and get if from a pet store. They will probably like the taste more and it is designed to agree with most dog's digestion since they swallow it.

Get an inexpensive rotating head toothbrush like one put out by Crest. In combo with the doggie toothpaste it works great and is much easier and safer to my hand than sticking my own finger in his mouth. He also has a harder time biting the rotating head and since it is an easier process, I brush his teeth more often. Better for us all.

Most of the doggy breath is indeed because of dirty teeth. Start brushing again and it will help. A month is not that long. Even with brushing, if your dog's teeth got smelly that fast, it's likely he's genetically dispositioned to needing his teeth cleaned more often. (I have a dog that needs them cleaned almost yearly, and one who never needs it, and they get the same home care. People are like that, too!) It's rather expensive at the vet, but look into insurance that might help. I personally use the Banfield Wellness Plan (through the vet clinic associated with Petsmart.) For $35/mo, I get a free dental cleaning as often as twice a year if they need it. ALL their preventative care is completely covered in fact, as well as unlimited free office visits and a 20% discount on ALL other services. It's a fabulous deal and it has saved me thousands over the years. I recommend it highly.

so dumb, dogs don't need no toothpaste.
give it an apple a day and it will naturally clean it's teeth.
how on earth do you think animals did it way before the invention of toothpastes or animals in the wild?

You can't make it at home - it's really not expensive to go to the pet store and buy a tube!
