Figure out what you're interested in and get together a list of companies that fall into those categories. I've done a number of internships and jobs in New York and you have to be very aggresive.
Look on Craig's list as well, but I would contact the companies of interest directly.
If you are in School, try going to the job/career department to see if they have access to a database for interns.
