We have a 60 lb border collie/retriever mix and she is always digging her way out!!! It's sooo annoying, not to mention damaging. I walk her almost every night for 30 min, she is rarely outside and she still digs! Is there a way to train her not to dig?

KJ...she was a rescue dog so I cannot be completely sure of the breed. I grew up with border collies so I am very familiar with the breed. I just need some constructive ideas on how to keep her from digging up my yard. I don't just walk her....my todder and I play with her all day.

Your dog may be in heat! The best way to prevent her from digging it to spay her.
Digging is often used as escape. Your dog probably wants to leave a fenced yard because there are so many more interesting things to do elsewhere.
Putting pepper, small amounts of citrus or diluted ammonia on the inappropriate area. There are also commercial products such as Keep Off, No-Dig, or Get Off My Garden.

Border Collie mix huh? ALMOST every night for 30 minutes? Hmmmm.....do you know anything about Border Collies? Maybe it's time to do a little research on the breed. This dog NEEDS a heck of a lot more then 30 minutes of exercise ALMOST every night. Try giving the dog a few hours of exercise, EVERY DAY!

Your dog needs considerably more exercise than just 30 minutes a day. She is digging probably to alleviate the boredom. You could build her a sand box and encourage her to dig only in there. Make sure it is large and deep enough to keep her occupied. You could hide tasty treats in it so she can hunt them and make it into a big game. That way she'll be digging where she can't do any damage.

What do you mean digging her way out?
Maybe she digs because she needs excersise. A dog that big needs more excersise than just 30minutes a day.
To train her not to dig, I was sugessted that when you see her digging tell her stop/no and if she does give her a treat.
See if this works. Keep on repeating this. :)

You need foil and water balloons. With the foil place it all the way around your fence and cover it with dirt dogs usually don't like foil. Also if you catch her in the act throw a water balloon right in front of her nose that will scare her/him a little but eventually it will stop digging.

KJ is right. more exercise. also you can line the inside of the fence with cinder blocks or bricks. if you don't want to go for a longer walk, just go play fetch for an hour or so with your dog every day. or let it chase you around the fenced yard.

Is she digging under a fence? Whenever I notice my dog doing this, I put a brick in his nice little hole. Eventually he got tired of starting new holes and gave up.
