Tinder Anything which will easily catch fire when exposed to the glowing char can be used as tinder, and many different things are used. Much of this depends upon the area of the country you live in, and what is available there. Flax tow, shredded hemp rope, dry grass, the list is long. Some have described using dry cattail down, but when I tried that, it burned up in a flash, much too quickly to serve well as tinder. Living in the eastern part of the country, I always use the bark of a species of juniper tree known locally as the Red Cedar. I strip bark from the tree, and it comes off in thin sheets one-half to one inch in width. Rubbing a bunch of this between the hands shreds it into a mess of very fine fibers, excellent for tinder. I keep this in well sealed plastic freezer bags at home, to make certain it is dry when I need to use it.
The above paste is from a website I found and I would say that the tinder could be sparked into without char, but with considerable more work. I believe military use flint and steel without char and make a nest to catch sparks and bring forth fire.

Below is a website I found for you that has many techniques. I would have listed them but I am sure it would be too extensive. Suffice it to say they are Bow Drill, trough, glasses, flint and steel.

Try searching for primitive fire starting and I am sure you will find plenty to keep you busy and your arms sore for weeks.

How 'about using a bow drill (www.elbtipi.com/FIRE) or a magnifying glass? You probably won't believe this but, picking lint from inside your pockets, your boots/shews, even your belly button,
will work as a tinder. Picked that one up from a survival school I attended. Rots of ruck.... I mean lots of luck!

Straw is one for flint and steal. Drill a hole in soft wood place a wooden stick in it and using string and a lot of work you can start a fire. YOU CAN READ UP OWN THIS SUBJECT AT YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY.
