It's basically a neuro pathway.......an electrical wire from the brain dividing up to the rest of the body. It transmits electrical impulses from the brain to the body, and from the body to the brain.

The spinal cord is part of the Central Nervous System. The Spinal cord transmits impulse from all over the body to the brain, so that the brain can trigger a response, which then travels back down the spinal cord.

The spinal cord is a thin, tubular structure that is an extension of the central nervous system from the brain and is enclosed in and protected by the bony vertebral column. The main function of the spinal cord is transmission of neural inputs between the periphery and the brain.

It is the cord that connects the brain to the other parts of the nervous system. It is a vital part of the central nervous system, transmitting electrical waves from the brain to other nerves or vice versa. You can simply say that it is a main passage of signals from the brain to the parts of the body. When it is cut off or obstructed serious problems will occur. The parts covered by the obstructed lines will experience numbness or worse paralyzed. There is no immediate cure for this and has very low possibility of surviving this. Also I forgot to say that it is also responsible for reflexes before signals enter the brain.

Spinal cord is essentially a conduit for transmission of information to and from thebrain. It carries sensory input from your nerves to the brain, then carries the "instructions" back to the organs.

Besides acting as a messenger, it also has limited function in processing its own information and causing reactions. A commonly known one is the knee jerk reaction. If you give a sharp tap under the knee cap, the quadriceps muscle will jerk, causing the leg to kick out. Other processing functions are in maintaining balance, anal tone, erections etc...

The scope of its functions is very diverse, but basically it all boils down to the above.

Good luck.
