I was told to soak my sticks in water so that they don't burn up, but they still did after soaking, so how long am I supposed to? Or is there anything else I can do?

Half an hour.
Get metal ones, they rock!
But don't get round or screw-type--plain, four sided cube type keep the food from rotating when you turn them, and are easiest to thread the food with.
Enjoy--kabobs are one of my most fave meals!

Soaking Kabob Sticks

If you soak them for 10 min., there is no way they should burn up.

I use kabob sticks often, and they have never burned. They have blackened, but never caught on fire. Are you putting them directly on the coals? That might be the problem. You should have a grate between the coals and whatever it is you are cooking.

5-10 minutes should do the trick, however I prefer the metal skewers they don't burn and the don't break when stringing food onto them. If you use metal just be sure to take them off the grill using thongs or pot holders.

Hey, I make Kabob all the time, Chinese style Asian, Indian Curry, Indonesian Satay etc., wooden or bamboo skewers are no good.
Use stainless steel, buy or make your own

When I used to use wood ones I did it for about an hour. Then I purchased the metal ones and LOVE those.I found them at a kitchen specialty store at the mall.

4-6 hours, they should be waterlogged.

30 minutes should be fine...otherwise, go buy some stainless steel ones...then you don't have to worry anymore....
