Try a shelter, especially one that euthanizes, that way you are saving your little one from unnecessary death. Though, my friends and I prefer the ASPCA, they are very good at what they do and can give you plenty of advice on how to care for your new family member.

When choosing one, keep in mind that each kitten has its own personality and each one is as different as you and me. So I would plan on spending a while playing with the kittens to get to know their personalities and see which one suits you best. Ask the people who work there questions about the kittens personalities, habits, and behavior. They spend a lot of time with them so they will know which ones are litterbox trained, friendly, active, playful, sociable, shy, skittish...etc. Having a general idea on what you're interested in will probably help the decision process, too.

In my experience, male and female kitties are affectionate so it really depends on them individually. But, it is useful to know that naturally female cats are more territorial. They can be very protective after a certain age of their home with other animals and so it might be more difficult to introduce another animal in the household later. This is true only sometimes, not with every female cat...again, it depends her personality. And also males can have a habit of spraying (urinating on) their territory, even after they are fixed.

So I think it just comes down to knowing what you want and taking your time choosing, you'll know which one is best for you when you see her/him! Good Luck!

Hi,
I would adopt if I were you. There is a real big problem with unwanted pets being abandoned, the worst part is that they are not neutered. The local shelter will take an application and they will make sure that you are responsible enough to own a companion animal. Not only that but you get a great deal cause they kitten or cat will be neutered, vaccinated and healthy. It is more than a 50% savings. If you buy him/her it will cost you way more. This way you will be helping Califrnia Animal Control keep it under wraps and Humane Society Monies available for the unwanted pet population until they find loving homes. Feel free to contact your local Humane Society, a veterinarian or myself for more information. Happy companion finding!

Adopt one.Don't buy one when there are already so many stray ones.I don't think it has something to do with the gender of the pet if it will be affectionate or not,it has to do with how you treat them.If you like hugging and cuddling with the pet and you do so from the first time you get the kitten the cat will grow up being depended on you and very affectionate,if you leave the kitten more on his/her own it will grow up being more independent. They can bond with more than one persons but usually they have one or two favorites, usually the ones that take care of them and provide them with their food.

Go to your local humane society and see what type of a selection they have. Both males and females can be equally affectionate. Yes, cats can bond with more than one person, but most cats I have had prefered one person over others.

With so many homeless animals in shelters, go adopt one! Don't buy an animal (pet shops don't always sell healthy ones, you know) when you can save a life!! Shelter animals are just longing for a real home...

animal shelters, humane society, petco every saturday, petsmart on the weekends, male cats are usually more affectionate. I have both and always found males to bond more with me.
