I never know what else to say besides "layered" but it never looks the way I want. Are there different layered looks and how do you describe it to your hair dresser?

Long layers means that all of your hair will still be long. Long layering is like adding a little layered detail to the bottom couple inches of your hair. this is best when you just don't want a blunt cut.
Layered usually means that the layers are cut higher up and are more spread thru your hair. This adds lots of movement and sexiness.
If you want the back of your hair cut with layers like an inverted bob so that it's shaved near your neck and then comes outward, you would call that "stacked layers".
You should bring pics into your stylist but realize that your hair may be different from the hair of the person in the pic so it may not look exactly right. Your haircutter wants to make you happy so have a chat before you wash your hair! I've found that if you tell them you're never happy, they will really try to help pinpoint the look you want before they cut. It is their job.
Hope that helps!
