Maybe your dog need to cough something up but CAN"T. That's a big difference from WON"T."
Your dog need to go to the vet. You are the parent, and he expects you to take care of him, and make things all better.
Getting on the internet to ask the question may be a loss of precious time in helping your baby.

If the dog is hacking a hard cough, it sounds more like kennel cough. Call a vet, but warn them before you take him in the office because it is contagious to other dogs. They might want to isolate your dog until they know for sure.

Cough something up, like...he has something lodged in his throat? Or cough it up, like...he ate something he shouldn't have?
If it's the latter, take him to the vet right away--making a dog cough up something dangerous can do more damage on the way up. If it's the former, a vet is probably also in order to give you direction.

sounds like your dog may have kennel cough a very contageous illness in dogs. He won't get better until he gets antibiotics and cough formula from a vet.

Depends on how long he's been coughing. If this has gone on for over a day, take him to the vet. If he just started 15 minutes ago, let him work it out.

If your dog is choking. Like no air exchange, then do adomin thrust or back blows until it comes up. If the dog goes unconscious close the dogs mouth and raise his chin and blow in his noise. If the air does not go in, adomin thrust, and contnue.
