SPENCE,
THE REASON SOFT STICKY PLAQUE(like the morning stuff you can scrape off with your fingernail before brushing) TURNS HARD INTO CALCULUS (aka, tartar) IS DUE TO THE MINERALS CONTAINED IN THE SALIVA AND THE BACTERIA IN THE CALCULUS.
REMEMBER HARD WATER DEPOSITS IN THE TOILET? SAME BASIC PRINCIPLE APPLIES HERE.
ONCE FORMED THE CALCULUS BEGINS TO FORM AN INFLAMMATION IN THE GUMS LEADING TO PERIODONTAL DISEASE AND BONE LOSS.

Yes it irritates the gums and causes them to recede, that's why when you get them cleaned they bleed as you haven't been able to clean the gum properly for a while if tartar is present.
