...what sort of cookies would you hope to find?
and would you want marzipan or preserved fruits?
OR: would you hope to receive instead a box of savory snacks like cheese sticks, poppy seed bread sticks, and crackers with herbs and spices?
I like to think about things like this and wonder what other people would like.

Depends on your personal preference.
Personally, I really enjoy a variety of homemade cookies. They taste better, someone put forth the effort for you, and you can pick-and-choose. What a pleasure!

Homemade cookies beat "savory snacks" every time.
I love any kind of butter cookies. I think cookies done in holiday shapes are great. I have a cookie press and make butter cookies in the shape of stars and trees for Christmas. I also make rolled sugar cookies and use cutters in the usual holiday shapes. Obviously, lots of red and green decorations are called for.
Another favorite that I like receiving is oatmeal and fruit cookies. I used to make them and everyone always loved them.

Shortbread or marzipan. Hate those savory snacks, I always find that a disappointment when that's what I find in a box.
