I have 1 female dog and 2 males. My female just finished up her heat cycle about 5 days ago (lots of fun around here). However, the two males are still a little on edge. They aren't trying to mount her anymore, but they are still on edge around each other. We've had to break up a couple of fights between them. Before our female went into heat, they never fought.

How long does it take for the effects of our females heat cycle to wear off? Will the males get back to normal eventually? Is there anything we can do to help?

It will depend on their personalities whether or not they ever get along again. If they are both dominant, it's very possible that they will not. Heat cycles last around three weeks and the smell does linger. If it hasn't been three weeks, she may still be in heat and the reason they aren't mounting her is because she is no longer receptive. If you are not planning on breeding, I recommend at least spaying the female to keep your males from fighting and so that they don't have to deal with the stress of her heat cycle. Until they are getting along well again for at least two weeks, do not let them around each other unless they on leash with a different person holding each leash. If you're not home, they need to be seperated. Altering one or both of them will help by reducing the hormones. When you take reproduction out of the equation, the peace is easier to keep. If you're not willing to fix any of the dogs, the males should be on leash and supervised two weeks before the heat cycle should start until two weeks after it ends unless it needs to go on longer. Good luck with them.

heat cycle lasts for 3 weeks...one week after she has stopped spotting. Give it another week and the boys should start to settle down. Just remember in this next week that you need to reconfirm that you are the alpha and not them and the behavior should be back to normal soon.

I can't answer your questions about dogs in heat as mine are all fixed and I don't have to deal with. You should probably look into getting all the dogs fixed too - much less headache

Get your female dog fixed...she will thank you, and you won't have to go through this anymore.

The best thing to do, really, is to spay and neuter all your pets.

If you think THIS is a pain how would you handle a litter of pups?
