I don't personally have this issue yet as my children are babies and I'm staying home with them for now, but I am thinking ahead to the future. Thanks.

In response to my first answer, I am not seeking details or names and addresses here. Just a general answer is all I'm interested in. Just saying a relative's or a daycare center would suffice. Thanks.

We were fortunate enough to move to a neighborhood where our children made friends. One of these friends mom is kind of the "neighborhood mom" and a lot of us whom get home at 5 rather than 3, she watches the kids at her house.

They are mostly outside anyway, and rarely give her any real trouble, except for tracking in mud. Once a week the neighborhood moms get together and clean her house, and we take her kids during the days on Saturdays and Sundays and give her a day off from kids altogether as a thank you.

Most schools have some sort of after school program that runs until around 6pm. They do their homework, have snack and do assorted activities. The cost is usually much cheaper than daycare. I pay about $10 a month. Or you could always find a local big brothers big sisters, or ymca. They have great kids programs that are next to free.

When my daughter was small and my ex and I worked the same shift the first day care she was in was on the base my ex was at which was about 5 minutes from my place of employment. When we were transfered I was able to get her into the day care facility that was onsite at my employer, both of these facilities made it very easy for me to take my hour lunch to spend with her. When she got older and was in school prior to being old enough to be home alone she was in many after school activities given at the school. Three days a week she was at basketball practice, One day was Girl Scouts, and one was a reading group held in the school's library. There was a time however where my ex and I worked differnt shifts and we would basically do a "hand off" from me to him on his way home and my way to work.
Once she was old enough to be home alone (almost 10) she would go home afterschool for the hour until I would get home.

My children are bussed to a daycare center that closes at 5:30 pm. They have a snack and then play with other school aged children until I can pick them up. It is very convienent!

My son goes to the after school program at the community center. They pick him up at school and bring him to the center. They play outside, play games, and do other activites. It's good because they offer care for summer and other school breaks and it is affordable if you're a member. Most YMCA's also offer this.

I never encountered this problem, since my hubby worked first shift and I worked second shift so we passed each other and just moved the kids from car to car. During issues of me having to go into work early, one of the grandparents or my brother picked up my daughter.
