Wing Chun is a style that was more prevalent in southern China. It was created by a woman, a Buddhist nun, for the purpose of defending oneself in close quarters.

Wing Chun was Bruce Lee's original discipline, before he transitioned into the creation of Jeet Kune Do (Way of the Intercepting Fist)

Wing Chun is know for its upper body effectiveness, and has very few kicks (most kicks are performed below the waist).

It's a good artform for a woman, especially if you are just starting out. Good luck!

Wing Chun is a Martial art that was developed (mainly as a close quarters or short range combat discipline) in the southern regions of China. There are many stories that circulate the origins of this discipline but it is very difficult due to the history being passed from teacher to student rather than a written account. there are also many diverse ways to study the Martial Art as with masny other disciplines, but it mainly stems from two distinct branches of study Wing Tsun and Leung Ting.

Wing Chun believes in using the least amount of required force in any fighting situation. It believes that small movements, properly timed and correctly positioned, can and should be used to defeat large movements. This is achieved through balance, body structure and relaxation. which is stated mainly as economy of movement.

I'm bored so here are it's origins
Wing Chun is a Chinese martial art invented by a nun named Ng Moy (beautiful spring time). The style was invented when she watched a crane fend off a wild cat. When ever the cat attacked it failed to hurt the crane. The crane looked very calm and relaxed using very little energy, it looked like it knew what it was doing. The cat soon ran off very exhausted. After the fight was over she began work on her new style. Ng Moy spent most of her time in the mountains, collecting herbs to make medicine. While out there she meant a man named Yim Yee, who had a daughter named Yim Wing Chun. At the time wing chun was engaged to get married, but she was being harassed by the leader of a local gang who wanted her for himself. Ng Moy wanted to help yim wing chun, so she told her to tell the gang leader that she needed a year to prepare for the wedding. In that year yim, learned all the forms of the new martial art, and became very good. She returned home to her father, and the members of the gang came to discuss the marriage with them. At that time Yim Yee informed the gang members that "his daughter will not marry a man unless he can defeat her in combat", and this of coarse made the gangsters laugh. When it came to the day of the fight, he found that when he made contact with her, she stuck to his arms (chi sau), controlled him and threw him down. Finally all of the gang members attacked her, and they suffered the same fate, the harder they attacked the farther they were thrown, and injured, they all fled in shame!! After this wing chun was free to marry the man she loved, Leung Bok Chau.
