cochineal. It is an important dye too. It is used in artist inks as well.
Red dye 40 however is a product of coal tar, a chemical dye.

I prefer the little bugs, they are natural. Chemical dyes in our food and skin care products, etc, should be avoided. Do not give it to your kids.

Look at the food and drug admin. website. I know they do make one rare red dye out of wee bugs. The cruel ones!

This is true. They use dye made out of bugs for strawberry milkshakes in mcdonalds.

I don't know about sqwishing bugs,but you can make red dye from red onion skins!
