The hairless cats are born this way. In the past, someone had a cat that was born without fur, and he kept the cat and bred it to others. The gene is a recessive one, so it doesn't show up very often, hence the rarity of it. When the gene did show up, the breeder mated two hairless cats together and started a new breed. The Sphinx is really a hairless oriental. The breed is called Sphinx because it resembles the Sphinx statue seen in Egypt near the pryamids.
They're expensive because of some very good salesmen and people crave anything that's new and weird. They're what's called "exotica." Some very silly people are willing to spend enormous amounts of money for unique things.
The dog has a comparable breed in the hairless Chihuahua.
I agree tho. They're really ugly, but some people think that's part of their "charm." I've heard tho, that they're difficult to care for. They're have delicate health and they get cold easily.

They are called Sphinx cats. Yes, they're born that way. The reason they're expensive is simply because they're extremely rare.
Personally, I don't like their look either, but some people do, and are willing to pay a lot of money for such a cat, since they're not easy to find. (For the same reason, you can almost never get one for "almost-free" from a rescue organization or shelter.)

The reason why these cats are so expensive is because they are produced by the none tedious artificial selection. Buying any well domesticated animal will be expensive such as a cat or dog. These hairless cats are more expensive because of their designer traits.
