The gene is a recessive one, so it doesn't show up very often, hence the rarity of it. When the gene did show up, the breeder mated two hairless cats together and started a new breed. The Sphinx is really a hairless oriental. The breed is called Sphinx because it resembles the Sphinx statue seen in Egypt near the pryamids.
They're expensive because of some very good salesmen and people crave anything that's new and weird. They're what's called "exotica." Some very silly people are willing to spend enormous amounts of money for unique things.
The dog has a comparable breed in the hairless Chihuahua.
I agree tho. They're really ugly, but some people think that's part of their "charm." I've heard tho, that they're difficult to care for. They're have delicate health and they get cold easily.

Well i saw one go for about $400 but yes most of them are really expensive and I don't see them very often that might be why. Also they might be resistant to some diseases, easy to do certainthings with, or are just rare
