Try to think of things that you and him could do together that you would both enjoy, there are plenty of things that you guys can do together that isn't very costly or doesn't cost at all. Good Luck.

Is your mother still living with you and your dad? Maybe your dad is tired from a routine life. Encourage him to have some fun, meet someone (if your mother is no longer with your dad), hang out with friends or join a gym or a club. You know you can always try to talk to your dad, tell him about your life and maybe the two of you can spend some time together outside or you can also just watch TV with him and find out what's his favorite shows? That would also be fun and can make him happy that you are spending time with him and talking to him. Ask him about work, who he don't like at work and why, ask him about his office' stories, get to know your dad better. Ask your dad what he has always been thinking about doing before he got married, things like that. Have fun!

does he like outdoor sports, like golf? or fishing? maybe you can buy him a set of golf clubs & a membership so he can start playing & making new friends. if he likes fishing, maybe get him a new fishing pole? you can join him when he goes fishing? if he likes bowling, get him a new bowling ball? or maybe....since you say him & your mom has been busy working to provide for the family, maybe you can get them a vacation (tickets to go on a CRUISE). It's not a bad idea, at least they can take a break from work. You'll be giving them a vacation at the same time thanking them for everything they do for you.

He may be happy just doing what he is doing. If you want to spice up his life take him shopping then out for vacation, maybe find some old friends of his, a social club. Older people don't always want alot of excitement in thier lives, just some good conversation so they can discuss the old days and somebody who wants to listen.

try not to be to abrupt when getting him out. start small first ask him to go to the grocery store with you, get some ingredients to make really nice meal for a couple friends, and work from there. try maybe home depot and get some home improvement thing for the house and work on it together. then maybe he will be more apt to get out and do things alone or maybe he will make his own friends.

That's nice of you. Your Dad may be going through a bad period but I don't know. I went through a period like that when I turned 40.

Maybe he's not bored. Maybe he's just relaxing from a hard week of work. Maybe he could take up bowling?
