I am graduating high school in a few months and my parents have promised me a new (well, used) car. They don't want to spend a lot (maybe about $10K?) but i do want to upgrade from the '99 mercury mystique i drive now.
Anyway i want something used but not too old, reliable, and safe. And preferrably something unique looking. (although i know that's a lot to ask for).
I'll be moving to san fransisco, california soon, so SUVs aren't my first choice.

I've been thinking about: vw- beetle and jetta, toyota- matrix or corolla S (sport), honda- civic, pontiac- vibe, or chrystler- PT cruiser or sebring convertible.

Does anyone have any suggestions, or comments on these cars?
Thanks!

The honda civic would probably be your best choice, it gets great gas mileage, looks nice and is very reliable. I would stay away from car like the chevy cavalier that are prone to have problems, loose their value quickly and has never won car of the year much less 6 times.

Honda Honda Honda ... I have been in the car business for 10 years and sell them all but only drive a Honda product personally. The Toyotas are a nice choice also.

The best car for you would be Chevrolet cavalier with power options, such as power locks, power windows, key-less entry. The cavalier is a very low maintenance, low on gas and reliable vehicle. And you can purchase a nice one for 10k with low mileage. The Cavalier has won most popular car of the year for 6 years because of its overall reliability, safety, and performance. Good luck
