Last week I got a puppy from a shelter and she is almost 9 weeks now. She was fine the whole week but the past few days started getting sick and took her to the vet and she tested positive for parvo. However, I bought this puppy not for myself but for a gift for my aunt when I go home from school next weekend. I am not financially able to pay for such huge vet bills as I figured she would be fine for just the one week I had her. The shelter said she had her first parvo and deworming too but I had to sign a contract saying they weren't responsible for the dog's health after it left. I really don't know what to do...the shelter won't take her back, I don't have the money for her treatment, but I can't just let a baby dog be killed. It's just hard since I've spent over 400 on her in just one week but won't even be able to take her more than likely. Can someone give me advice??

Talk to the vet that tested her for Parvo and ask them for advice. Let them know the situation and that you don't want to "put her down" (kill her) if possible. I'm sure they will help you all they can. FYI: See if the vet has a payment plan. Mine does here in Tx. and, if "Columbus", our cat, got sick I'd be glad to have a plan like that. I would give you my vet's number, but I don't know where you are. If you're near my area, his name is Dr. Mark C. Pirrung. Good luck!

you bought the puppy for your aunt give it to her and offer to help her pay the bills. explain to her everything you just said right here. i dont think she will upset with you at all. and i believe that she will appreciate the fact you are willing to help her out. BUT at the same time if that puppy is not on meds right now it is gonna die a horrible death. parvo puppy's need to be in the hospital getting IV drips so they do not dehydrate and they also get a ton of meds while they are there. Good luck and let us all know

have someone else relinquish the dog to the pound. they won't know it is the same dog- unless they put a microchip in it. only thing is that parvo is VERY contagious and it will probably make all of the other dogs sick. you could find out if they have a program (like humane society) that helps with medical bills. if you can't do anything for it then have it put to sleep. it will only suffer if you don't.

pups specially those under three months of age are very much susceptible to viral diseases just like Parvo and because it is a viral disease there is no cure for that. it is the animals own immune system which will determine if he can make it or not. supportive treatment is the only thing that we can do to help them. and chances of survivability for pups is very low. it is also highly transmissible to other dogs tho its not zoonotic. i guess if someone can't take care of her its better if you will just end up her suffering coz if you will not be able to bring her for treatment, she will end up dying sooner....

if you can not go to the vets for treatment-- this is my best advise. Parvo kills a puppy by DEHYDRATION (diarrhea and vomiting)-- so the key here is hydration. If you can keep fluids down he may have a chance.
** parvo is highly contagious to OTHER dogs- even years later in the grass-- so PLEASE ISOLATE your puppy in a kennel in the house and clean waste daily, line kennel with newspaper and bag it up carefully, disinfect with dilute BLEACH solution (kills parvo). dont let him outside to waste.
** HYDRATION, and preventing vomiting and diarrhea.
maybe you can ask your vet if they will direct you on how to do this at home-- some vets will be willing to send you home with a bag of fluids so that you can treat him with SUBCUTANEOUS fluids at home. Its easy-- all you do is stick a needle under the SKIN and let fluids in. a lot of vets send home fluid bags that do not cost a lot (like for kidney failure cats) so please request this.
getting the fluids in will save his life. if this vet will not give you a bag-- see another who will.
then to prevent loss of water from diarrhea-- ask the vet about a dosage that you can give of Kayo=pectate (or store anti-diarrheal meds). there are some that are OK to give for this.
so communicate with the vet what you can do at home-- it is possible!!
you can even give gatorade or water by mouth.plus SQ fluids.
key points-- HYDRATION, prevent diarrhea and losses of water. ISOLATE. disenfect wiith dilute bleach.

If you don't treat the dog it will die an awful death. You are best to have the dog put to sleep if you can't treat it. The suffering it will go through is not something you want on your conscience.
