Oh my God, this is such a loaded question. An expert can write volumes about this. However to cut it short and simple;
There are:
1- Red wines
2- White wines
3- Rosé wines
4- Sparkling wines
Each in turn can be divided into sub categories as:
a- dry
b- medium dry
c- medium sweet
d- sweet (or liquor wine).
Also, wines are categories according to the grape varieties used in producing them. If only one type of grape is used in the making of a wine, it is called a "monosepage". If more than one type of grape is used, then it is called a "coupage".
In general terms, wines are also differentiated depending on which country they are produced in, and also which region of that specific country. i.e. French wines; Bordeaux wines etc.
If you do a simple search on internet, you will find thousands of good websites about wines.
