Run in to Best Buy, grab the first copy of Windows Vista you see, act like you're going to the register to pay for it, and then bolt for the door as fast as you can. Let me know how it works out.

Yes, but I am having this problem (or perhaps I am just stupid): How do I even by a Windows Vista? I mean I have an illegal copy of Windows XP (hush, dont tell Microsoft); now I think of the totally impossible financial outset of buying a Vista, but it seems that if you do not have a previous authorised Windows of some kind you cannot buy a new once off indepent Vista and start a new life with it.
How can one possibly afford it in either case? In South Africa it costs about 186 British Pounds, which is close to half my full after deductions salary (or better explained I will have to save for 2 years to buy it)!?

It is simple really. I dont understand why so many people are finding it difficult to find an official free version of windows vista?
Just go to your nearest hill station, rent a cottage with windows, open the windows and you get beautiful official vista for free... (even though the cottage is rented, the vista itself is free ...)

You will have to buy a copy of Vista like everybody else has to, so dig deep in to your pockets and spend some of that cash you have, and why do you want everything for nothing, nothing is free in this world has nobody told you that yet. good luck with your quest.

Ask someone to buy it for you.

If you want a free OS, switch to Linux. You can download a user-friendly version at http://www.ubuntu.com/

If you want Vista, pay up like the rest of us.
