What is wrong with this dog?
I just left a shoe store where a woman had her dog at work. I noticed that the dog was off balance...toward the right side. She was a basset hound and seriously skinny. I said wow...she's skinny and the lady said yes she has been really losing weight in the past few days. I sat down with the dog and she just layed her head in my lap. Weak, is not the word for this dog. She also had her eyes almost covered with skin/tissue that is normally in the corner of your eyes. When standing her hind foot was turned under...like she couldn't pick it up to put the pad of her foot on the floor.
I volunteered to run the dog to the vet. for her but she said she was trying to get her brother to take her, and she was having a hard time getting in touch with him...but she would make him take her to the vet. I cried for the dog as I left...another customer was kneeled down praying for the dog. What is wrong? Any sugestions...

Number one wrong thing here is the owner hasn't already taken the dog to the vet. It's hard to say what exactly may be wrong with such little info. It does sound as if this poor animal is seriously ill and should be seen by an ER vet asap. Kudos for your offer to take it to the vet. The owner should have let you in my opinion. I would call animal control and the local humane society.

No 1 the lady should have already taken the dog to the vet. If you can and will go back to the store and convince her to let you take it to the ER Immediately. Sounds like a stroke or neurololical.? It must be seen NOW!!! It may already be to late. Could also be a type of poisoning. If she will not let you get her name and number if possible and call the humane society and if they will not come find a rescue group in your area that will help. The dog's time is running out.

It sounds like vestibular disease, which is treatable! Did you notice whether or not the eyes were giggling back and forth or not? It comes from an inner ear infection which is EXTREMELY common in bassets because of their ears. They get a regular ear infection which turns to the inner ear and this makes them very dizzy and nausiated therefor they stop eating and drinking. Most of these dogs will circle in one direction or another and not be able to walk a straight line due to the balance problems the inner ear affect. She needs to go immediately to a vet, it is serious but treatable. It is like they are on a constant merry go round going really fast and once they get off they can't walk right, are dizzy and nausiated and vomiting, you wouldn't eat eather. Very misserable problem. Tell her to ask vet to check the ears to rule out vestibular disease, if thats okay, yes probably stroke, but with basset ears always check them first they are soooo prone to problems. Good luck

If you don't buy this answer, then google vestibular disease and look at the symtoms, they are a perfect match for this dog.

It relies upon on the area. If the dogs is whelping a muddle of puppies or a cat has a splash diarhhea then the 1st option would be to deal with it at abode to work out if the area gets extra effective. And mutually as waiting human beings can ask different puppy vendors in the event that they have any techniques on the thank you to handle the difficulty and ask for known suggestion. If it would not get extra effective then the subsequent option is the vet. some human beings do have some hum dingers on right here, yet for the main area the questions are good, valid ones.

She may just have a cold, bassett hounds can not see very well, and rely on their sense of smell.. if she cant smell it, she wont eat it. either way, she needs to go to the vet.. i recommend you call the ASPCA or you local equivalent. they will take the dog and get it the proper medical care before it does die. it sounds very serious. You must be a very caring person to show that much concern for an animal, the are people who wouldnt give the dog a thought.

The dog honesty just sounds elderly, and yes of course she should take the dog to the vet. Older dogs age differently, and I know bassets usually get tumors and filmy eyes with catracts. She probably does care for the dog well, it's just getting older, like people do.
But yes she should take it to the vet.

what can you do? If the woman doesn't do anything and it isn't your dog? You can report her to the humane society or the aspca or the animal shelter for animal abuse immediately. maybe they can get the dog help.
