According to Webster:

Ski: Norwegian, from Old Norse "skith", a stick of wood.
And apparently, patio comes from the Spanish word "patio". Same meaning, I guess.

ski = Norwegian origin from the nordic "skith" meaning to divide a log of wood.

"Patio" is a Spanish word, which is used in the same way as in English.
"Ski" is a norse word, but that's all I know.
