You can absolutely get loans on your own. All you have to do is fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). This will also tell you what federal grants you qualify for.
You can do it online at www.fafsa.ed.gov
You'll have to use the tax information from you parents as long as they claim you as a dependent, but the loans will be in your name and your parents will NOT have to cosign or be responsible for repaying them. Once you claim yourself as independent from your parents (meaning they don't provide the majority of your income) you will use your own tax information. This is also a form you will have to fill out every year that you are in college. You need to do it ASAP, though, because I believe the deadline is March 1st.
I supported myself and paid for my college degree this way and I'm going through the process again to pay for law school. I just turned 24. The only time you would need a co-signer for a loan is if you take a private loan, which you should only do if your totally desperate and the Federal loans don't cover your tuition because the interest rates are siginificantly higher on private loans.
You should also contact the financial aid department at the college you're planning on attending. They will tell you everything they require and, in some cases, even help you fill out the forms. They are a great resource.
Side note: You can absolutely pay for an education WITHOUT have to join the armed forces. I have a number of family members in the armed forces and I believe you should only join if you truly believe in what they do.
Sorry the answer is so long.

Yes you can but as with all loans you have to start paying them back 6 months after graduating. Watch for scams and high interest rates though. Go to MyRichUncle, and what about filing your FAFSA (ASAP)? That will let you know if you qualify for Pell Grants. You will need to do this with your step dad though as he will have to put in all of his income. Go to the FAFSA website and GOOD LUCK!!!!!!P.S. You have a lot of leadway with individual colleges in explaining your special circumstances for needing financial aid but all colleges require the FAFSA 1st. Danthecanman Is Wrong!!!!! You cannot get most things he said JUST because you're over 18. That is completly incorrect. If you are not independent (have a spouse,or child), have been out of school for over 5 years, ETC. you don't qualify for much without your parents information. Even if there is something wrong with "stepdaddy" telling you all those things isn't giving you the answer you're looking for.

You can get a stafford loan without anyone's signature which will be guarenteed by .the government but you will need to have your parent's information and signature on the FAFSA. Having them sign the FAFSA does not in anyway make them liable for your loan debt but instead the information will be used to determine how much funding you qualify for. The Stafford Loan will probably not pay for your full tuition and fees so look toward a junior college.

your first step should be to fill out a federal financial aid form,,,,,,,, depending on your age would depend on if you must include your parents income,,,,,, you may well be able to file it just using your mothers income,, on it you can also apply for student loans, these type loans would come direct from the dept of education,,,,, so check all of that out, if you havent,,,,,,link here
http://studentaid.ed.gov/PORTALSWebApp/students/english/index.jsp
fill out the student aid form,,, then talk with the financial advisor at the school you wish to go to,,,,, there are many combinations of grants, scholarships, loans etc, that practically all students can get the help they need

I was able to get school loans on my own. The only thing is for loans and stuff you will need to fill out the FAFSA and you will need your parents tax returns for that. Other than that you should be able to do it on your own.

You most certainly can sweetheart, Go to whatever college you plan to attend and speak to a financial counselor, make sure you get a grant so you do not have to pay it back. Do not let people tell you just anything to keep you from succeeding. GOOD LUCK TO YOU!
