We have a female pug/shar pei mix that is closer to the size of a pug. She is 7 months old now and was wondering at what age a female dog goes into heat. I AM NOT planning on breeding her, but would like to know if I can still get her spayed before her first heat.

She will probably be going in soon. Dogs can go in anywhere from 6 months to 2 years although the latter is rather rare. I personally recommend that a bit ch be allowed one heat before being spayed simply to allow the hormones to calm her down and help her grow up. Only a responsible owner should follow this advice and only if they are certain they can keep an "accident" from happening. If you KNOW you can do this, then wait. Otherwise have her altered ASAP.

Generally smaller breeds go into heat earlier and larger breeds later. With a mix like that, there's no easy guess. For dogs in general, it's often between 6-12 months with some going in as late as 18-24 months (this is not common). You can definitely still get her spayed before her first heat cycle if she hasn't had it yet. You can even get it done DURING the heat cycle but keep in mind that some vets charge extra for doing it at that time.

Thank you for being a responsible pet owner!

6 to 7 months old is when a female has their 1st heat. Now youll have to wait till this one is over.

Smaller dogs tend to have their first heat around 7-9 months, larger dogs around 9-11 months. So, you should schedule her ASAP to get the full benefits of an ***immature*** ovariohysterectomy (= no chance of ever getting mammary cancer later in life).

Bitches can have their first season anywhere from 6 mths to 2 years. It really is a matter of waiting. Ask you vet about early spaying. I personally prefer to wait until after their first season.

I do not understand your question? Go into heat? What does that phrase mean?
