There are various types of poker games, the most popular today is the Texas Holdem, which IMO is the easiest to follow.
I found PartywithPoker.com gave me the basics to the rules and tips.
Good luck!!

Hi Sweet:

To play poker well takes time and patience. If you are just learning then I suggest you understand the rules of the poker game of your choice. Once you understand the rules you can begin to learn by watching others play. Read about some simple basic strategies and play tight until you develop your own style for betting, bluffing and the likes.

Play at the very low limit tables or sit & go tournaments. I would suggest to you nothing more than a $3.00/tournament until you get the hang of the game. Remember playing at those limits you are playing with others who are just learning so you will all make mistakes at first.

Also remember playing at the free tables is a completely different experience then the real money tables. The free players tend to play much looser as they have nothing to lose. I hope this helped and I have included a link to a poker site where you will find the rules on the left menu.

Once you are ready for real play I suggest you sign-up at absolute as they have 1000's of players both free and for real money. They have very low limit tables and tournaments where you can hone your new found skills.

I wish you luck and hope to see you at the tables with the "big" stack!

Well first what type of poker do you want to learn? http://www.theultimatepokerguide.com has the rules for nearly every form of poker. Check them for which poker you want to play and read the rules. That is a good start.

Play on the free sites until you figure out what you are doing. I played for three months like this. This will teach you the basics. Then before you play for money watch it on t.v. you can see what hands people play and odds they have of winning. Then when you want to take the next step play for small small amouts. On-line you can play for pennies so even if you are no good you can learn to play for under $100 dollars. In order to get good you have to sit through thousands of hands. Then if you want to get really good read books like Ace on the River, Harrington on Hold'em or Super System. These books give both basic and advanced strategies that are very easy to understand. Good luck!
