Teachers are teach so why aren't students called learners?

The word student is similar to the word study, but students are also called learners sometimes. It is a synonym. I think that it depends on the author if you are reading and the speaker if you are listening.

Students MEANS learners. (Study=learn)

Well yes, teachers tend to get called "teach"
but if we called students "studs" they may get the wrong idea!
