I have a parakeet that sometimes bobs his head up and down. Also, when he makes little sounds, like not a chirp! loudly, but little sounds, what does this mean? Is he happy? Or sad?

Also, how can you tell how old a parakeet is?

My parakeet does this also. He usually does it when he is happy. Sometimes when they do that they are getting ready to regurgitate. If your bird does regurgitate for you that means that he really loves you (seriously). Parakeets regurgitate for their mates. I saw my parakeet regurgitate for my lovebird.

You can also train your parakeet to bob his head on command. If you bob your head up and down he will often follow. If you teach him that up and down means "yes" eventually you will be able to get him to do it by the simple command of "yes" you can also teach your bird"no" by shaking your head side to side.

My parakeet hasn't learned the commands yet but he will shake his head along with me when I shake mine. It takes time, but if you work with him a few times a day for about 10-15 minutes he will learn it in no time.

Also, about the age thing. I really don't know how you tell the exact age. If your bird has white around his eye that does mean he is old. If his eyes are black he is young. Another thing is the cere (the area above the beak) if this is a whitish color, it usually means your bird is very young. When it is the definite blue or brown that is when your bird is an adult. Blue is male and brown is a female.

the bobbing is what birds do to bring food up from their stomachs to give to someone they love. (like they feed each other wile they are incubating eggs) you might be the lucky recipient of a ready made ,ready digested meal. (barf) but this means that he really likes you.

I have a sun conure that does the same. All parrots do it. It's just part of being a bird.

He might be bored. I make noises to entertain myself when I'm bored. They are pretty social animals.
