How is the medical services there? The quality and availability?

it depends on the type of policy your looking for and what type of care you expect. If your an Western and expect care you would receive in the USA your have a hard time on $1,000 a month. Since you say your planning to retire it means your older and will have more problems. If you go to a Thai public hospital the cost is low for care, but most doctors at these hospitals are just pill pushers, you pay 30 baht to see the doctor and 1,000 baht for your medicine. Like I told you before I think you better come here for a visit before you make any decision.

Look up BUPA. It is an english company offering medical insurance especially to expats in Thailand. You can get a policies from 50,000 to 75,000 baht for the year, depending on age and coverage. Example is for a person 50-60 years old and mid range policy.
