I have heard a rumour that lillys in the garden are deadly to domestic cats and that it has something to do with the smell.

Lillies
There have been several high profile cases of cats being poisoned by lillies. A Siamese cat died in Britain after brushing past a vase of cut lillies bought from a supermarket. The pollen from the lillies fell onto the cats coat and the cat was poisoned by ingesting the pollen while grooming. The cat's family had no idea of the risk posed by lillies and were devastated to lose their cat in such an avoidable way. I also know of a kitten who recently was rushed to the vets after getting pollen on his face. The vet was unaware that lillies were so dangerous to cats. All parts of the lilly are extremely toxic to cats. This includes Lilly plants (such as peace Lillies) as well as bouquets of cut flowers.

Poster at my vet says yes. Apparently it can be very dangerous for a cat if it brushes past the lily, especially the stargazer type (pink with very orange pollen). The cat will some how ingest the poison through it's skin and it can be very bad news.

Lilies to avoid if you have a cat in your home include:

Easter Lily (Lilium Longiflorum)

Stargazer Lily (Lilium Orientalis )

Rubrum Lily (Lilium Speciosum)

Asiatic Hybrid Lily (Lily Asiatic Delicious & Lily Asiatic Montreaux )
Japanese Show Lily (Lilium Lancifolium)

Day Lily (Hemerocallis Species)

It's the pollen not the smell itself. If cats inhale the pollen or get it on their fur and lick it off while grooming then they can die.

A vet might tell you yes where a florist will tell you no. Best bet is don't allow kitty to chew on any plant other than catnip.
