for the most part that is "kind of" accurate. only 12% of the US population participates in regular exercise. that would mean that most likely almost 90% of the US population is ingesting too many carbs (and the wrong types of carbs) for the level of daily activity.

if you are not active the body simple does not need a lot of carbs to function normally.

It's not that carbs are fattening, it is (as another reader has already said) that your body uses them preferentially before other forms of energy.

If you need to lose weight then limit your carbs to breakfast with a few for lunch and keep them to a minimum in the evening. Whatever you take in as carbohydrate will be used immediately or, if not required, converted into fat and stored. Protein is broken down and used as energy but the excess is converted to urea and excreted via the kidney and urine. Therefore, eat a load of protein for your evening meal with loads of green veg - not potatoes etc as they are full of carbohydrates.

Similarly, if you drink a smoothy with loads of fruit late at night then all the fruit sugars (again, carbs) that you don't immediately need (which isn't a lot when you are laying on the couch!) will be converted to fat. Keep your smoothies and fruit for earlier in the day.

The reason why people in China aren't the same size as people in the USA (or Hull) is that they are far more active so burn it off.

Being obese and overweight does contribute to one food but to eating lots of different foods so if you are overweight and eat alot of carbs, cutting down on them does help you lose weight. I cut down and the fat dropped off me......I still eat rice and potato and bread, but not as much as i used to. People in India and China (in the poor areas), don't eat much food besides rice as it is their staple diet, so there would be no way for them to get overweight. But then look at South Africa the black people over there eat alot of maize (pap and puto) and most of the women are overweight because they eat it in large quantities.

I suppose its wrong for people to say that rice is bad because its a natural and wholefood but it is a good source of energy but then what happens if you eat too much energy rich foods.....?

"Medical Industry"?? Exactly who are you speaking of?

Medical and Dietary professionals will always point to the food pyramid, with a balance of Fat, Protein and Carbohydrates.

The only people dissing Carbs are those promoting their own money-making schemes such as fad diets, fad diet books, diet 'programs', patent medicines, and untested, unnapproved supplements.

Eating more than you need of ANYTHING will result in fat.

The point is that our organism prefers to burn carbs because they can be used as such to produce energy. Therefore, whenever you have carbs available, your body will use them rather than fats to produce energy. So, if you are on a diet to get slimmer, you should avoid eating too many carbs if you want your body to burn fat

Because carbs in excess are fattening, same as calories.

It's the type of carbs that make the difference. You can eat all the vegetables and fruit you want. The bad ones are pasta, bread, cakes cookies and other junk.Limit them or stay away from them.
