Definately you can. there are 2 ways of doing it. You can connect your camcorder to the computer by USB and use the Sony software to transfer the video. However, the video copied is of a smaller size. A better way is to connect the video out (and Audio out) of your camera to the video in of your computer's TV tuner card _ if you dont have one, get one, it is pretty cheap. Then you can play the video on the camcorder, and record it onto the computer by the TV tuner's software. You will get good quality, also, it will record in MPEG II, rather than AVI which will save disk space

Greetings,
I answered a question very close to this a few days ago. This should help you:
You can convert VHS (or other analog source) to DVD using a computer. There are several ways to do this.
-----
First is to get a capture card for analog sources and capture to your hard drive. Do a Google Search for options. (Sorry Yahoo, Google does a better website search!)
Of course you need a basic video editor program (to cut spaces between tape sections or to edit content) and a program that also can burn a DVD. Some editors do not include a burner - like the free Windows Movie Maker on XP.
Another way to save some money is to use your Digital Camcorder’s "Digital Pass Thru" if it has that function. [In your case, it doesn't sound like you have a Digital camcorder - but if you buy a Digital8 camcorder, you can play your Hi8 tapes in them and it will convert them in camcorder.] My older Digital8 camcorder by Sony (the DCR-TRV340) has that function. You just plug the fire wire into the camcorder, plug the analog three plug cord into the analog port on the camcorder and turn the unit to VCR.
(A very strange thing about this unit is that in order to transfer streaming data, like TV or a VCR tape signal, to the hard drive without recording to the Hi8 tape, I have to remove any tape from the camcorder. This was not well documented in the manual and I had to play around with it for a while before I figured it out.)
If you don't have a camcorder that does this, it might be worth your time/money to check out Craigslist.com. Sometimes you can find a camcorder like mine for cheap! Then again, a dedicated video capture card with HD ability would be really cool and you could take it with you between PC's if it's a USB/Fire wire version.
Choices, choices...
Hope that helps you.
Jeff

I also have the same handycam, it supports recording only pictures from the cassate, also it played the videos fine but i found a solution for that...
Either find a screen capturing software which will capture the movie when it is playing on your PC (but it will be a Mess)
So, or you install a TV tuner card (borrow it from ur friend ur a bew a new one, it only costs a 1000 bucks!)
then, as you played ur movies in ur TV, the same way play it on ur PC through the TV tuner card, and when u will buy a TV Tuner card it will have a bundled software that supports recording TV, so just record the Video while u r playing it on your TV Tuner Card
and be carefull to buy only Internal TV tuner card, not external one.
If u hav any problem contact me mr.mazic@yahoo.co.in (IM me)

Is it digital (350, 260) or is it analog (Hi 8 like a 138, 150, etc.).
If it's digital you need a firewire and your computer must support firewire. Otherwiseyou need a firewire card.
If it's analog you need a capture card. Go to the Dazzle, Pinnacle and Turtle Beach web sites. Capture cards are around $140
Turtle Beach makes a so so card (9 bits not 10) that is USB 2.0 compatible, plus they make a PCI board capture card (10 bit).
