I dont know much about hybrid cars...are they really worth it? The gas milage? the more environment friendliness? Any other benefits? What about setbacks? is there anything that you compormise performance-wise with a hybrid? Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Hybrid cars can be a good thing, the trick is that most get better gas milage in the city in stop and go conditions and less on highway and long travel situations. The key is that the vehicle uses the electric motors to charge the batteries in a braking condition. Therefore, when you apply the brakes, the electric motors polarity is reversed and it works against the forward momentum of the vehicle.

Most peoplethink that hybrids are the end all, be all answer, but in reality, it depends on what driving conditions your encounter the most.

Basically, if you commute in town in stop and go traffic, the hybrids will doo great for your gas bill.

If you are cruising down the highway, the gas mileage will be horrible, since the vehicle will be running the under powered gas engine the entire trip.

We have been waiting 15 years waiting for fuel cell technology thinking "it will be coming out in the next few years". I guess I am sick of waiting for it to become mainstream and wanted to do what I can now. I'm glad too....since we bought our Prius, not only do I feel better about our gas mileage--the price of gas has increased pretty drastically and I feel good driving past the gas station rather than stopping there so frequently!
