Some of the Cherokee were available as rear wheel drive only. It saved several hundred dollars if a person didn't feel they needed the four wheel option.
I don't know about Wranglers, thought they ALL came with four wheel.
On the Cherokee it is a simple matter of looking under the front to see if the front axle has a drive shaft coming to it from about the middle of the vehicle. If not, it is rear wheel, two wheel drive only....

Nope. I have a 2wd Grand Cherokee. The new Wranglers come 4x4 & 4x2. Even back in the 50s there were some 4x2 CJ3s
The list of 2wd Jeeps could go on but its saturday and I wanna play w/my YJ.....its just when people say JEEP people assume its a 4x4.

There are alot of two wheel drive jeeps. Starting back in the forties or fifties with the Jeepster and the Utility Wagons, and some of the forward control (FC) trucks may have been 2wd. Mail Jeeps (DJ's) are also 2wd. Some Cherokees (XJ) and Grand Cherokees (WJ, ZJ) are 2wd also but you typically only find those in the south.

No. I owned a '92 Cherokee 5 speed (standard) Rwd. Got it down in Tx. I originally thought it was 4wd when I first got it then noticed there wasn't a lever for 4wd. That and the front axle was a give away too. It unfortunately met an untimely death with a deer. Since it was only 2wd the insurance company scrapped it. It was for the better I guess as it didn't go worth crap in the winter (lots of snow where I live, NorthEast US). But it had loads of power especially with the manual transmission. It was good on gas too. Shifting that thing was the best part :)

nope, but in the Sixtys Jeep wanted to be hip (mainly for Hawaii) they built two- drive PINK Jeeps with a Pink and White Safari top, there were Jeep wagons that were two wheel, then some Full size Jeep trucks and Cherokees, the Jeeps of the ninties and of course the Jeeps that were Right hand drive for US Mail (with a non-removal hard top)

No, contrary to popular belief, not all jeeps are 4x4's. I personally wouldn't own one if it wasn't a 4x4 but not everyone likes off-roading or the price of insurance that comes along with it.

No, there are 2WD options available on every jeep model, why anyone would buy a 2WD Jeep is beyond me but yes there are 2WD models available. Just ask your dealer.
