Why can't I look videos online with the new Windows Vista Media Player?

If I want to look at particular videos it wants me to install a less current version of Windows Media Player. Why doesn't it work with the new version on Vista that I have?

Vista is so packed with security features it barely works at all. But that's Windows for ya! Your computer has started it must now crash.
