Too much of anything is a bad thing especially in regards to religion. The key to life is moderation.

From the Bible: "Do not turn to the right hand or the left hand.
Let your moderation be known to all men. The Lord is at hand."
Not all people who sound religious are pleasing the Lord.
Living one's life in moderation is wise, while fanaticism leads to extremes which can lead to error and become a religion in itself.
But we still have to be on the right path to begin with.

From an external point of view I would have to say the two are unrelated.

I speculate that extremists feel spiritually fulfilled doing what ever their "God" told them to do.

You have to remember that there can be religions extremists among Mulisms, Christians, Jews, Hindus, Sikh, etc.
