James was an elder in the church at Jerusalem, and was a member of the council that met to decide what requirements the Gentile believers were to follow, since they weren't Jews. (Acts 15)

He wrote the letter to the church that is named for him, and was known by those in Jerusalem as James the Just.

Because he wouldn't bow to the Jewish Authorities in denying his brother Jesus as Messiah, they threw him from the pinnacle of the Temple, and when he didn't die from that, they stoned him to death, according to Hegesippus.

He was not considered God's son, since he was Joseph and Mary's son, not God's.

Here we go.

It is said that he was the guy that wrote the book of James.

There were 2 original Apostles named James. James the son of zeberdee and James the son of Alphaeus.
James the son of zeberdee was executed in Acts 12:2. The remaining James became prominent in the church as a leader. This was the Lord's brother.
It also gives you insight into Joseph's other name, for most of the people had two or more names. ( Alphaeus )
Gal 1:19 reviels the Lord's brother.

Gal 1:19 But I did not see any other of the apostles except James, the Lord's brother.
And,
After Jesus rose again, He appeared to James first then to all the other apostles.
1 Cor 15:7 then He appeared to James, then to all the apostles;
And,
We know that James was one of the Lord's brothers.
Mat 13:55 "Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not His mother called Mary, and His brothers, James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?

Acts 12:17 indicates he was a big wheel in the Jerusalem congregation.
He wrote a book included in the Bible.
1 Corinthians 9:5 indicates he was a married man.
1 Corinthians 15:7 says Jesus appeared to him personally after Jesus was resurrected.
Galations 1:18 says he played a major role in helping Saul become the Apostle Paul.
There is no record in the Scriptures of James’ death. The secular historian Josephus, however, says that during the interval between the death of Governor Festus, about 62 C.E., and the arrival of his successor Albinus, the high priest, Ananus (Ananias), “convened the judges of the Sanhedrin and brought before them a man named James, the brother of Jesus who was called the Christ, and certain others. He accused them of having transgressed the law and delivered them up to be stoned.”—Jewish Antiquities.

James' occupation is not mentioned in the Bible, but it would seem that he was married (1 Corinthians 9:5). While apparently a non-believer during Jesus' ministry, he was present for the outpouring of Holy Spirit at Pentecost 33 CE (Acts 1:13), and his subsequent writing of the book of James, and it's inclusion in Bible canon show that he did become a believer.

Jesus was the chosen one, not James (to answer your other comment) but I guess in a way we are all God's children. He was also a follower of the Jewish faith and sort of took over Jesus' position once he passed away. Different faiths believe in different histories, if you know what I mean. You could look it up online!

Jesus had no brothers. When referring to 'brother' in the New Testament, they were referring to either fellow believers or Jesus' cousins. Much like today, we call someone 'brother' if they are a friend, or if they believe as we do.

To answer your question, yes, he believed the 'hype'.

IN ANSWER TO YOUR ADDITIONAL: As my above answer states, Jesus had no literal brother named James. God's only begotten son was Jesus.

He wasn't famous but he did believe Jesus was the Son of God, and was one of Jesus' followers. He (James) was not the Son of God. He was Joseph and Mary's son.
