They're their own government.

Ratu Josefa is their current president placed in office by Commodore Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama following his military coup in 2006.

Its an independant island with its own sovereignty.Fearful of becoming a Tongan colony under Maafu,they ceded their own island to become a British Colony until the late 1940s.
