They just did an episode of Mythbusters that was all about that. Go to Discovery.com to see if you can find highlights from the episode. Or... buy a 2-liter of diet coke, a pack of mentos, and have at it in an open field or parking lot!

Check out the spot Mythbusters did on Mento's and Diet Coke. They did several experiments using different ingredients to figure out the exact components that cause the geyser effect. The video below should have most of the highlights. Sorry that it is a video link, but they do give a pretty good scientific explanation that should be able to get you started.

all of the sugar in the mentos reacts with the carbonated water and causes a great big fountain of diet coke. the best way to drop them in, is to make a paper funnel, put the mentos in it, and then drop them all in at once. then run. we did this in my chemistry class, and it was really cool. plus, it should work with any soda.
