I am 51, SWF, with rheumatoid arthritis. Even with the latest medical techniques, I have pain and fatigue. Also, my only son was killed when he was 16. I have no real friends, and my family just really isn't there for me. Church and prayer doesn't seem to help. I counsel schoolkids, but I am miserable. I also don't make enough money to live on. Counseling and antidepressants haven't helped. Please help.

I am very sorry to hear how you are feeling! You clearly have had and are having a difficult life. I must tell you that what strikes me the most is your feeling that church and prayer doesn't seem to help. The RIGHT church where God is present and moving in people's lives, causing them to love you and be active in your life WILL make a WORLD of difference for you (eternally I might add!). My suggestion for your prayer life is simple yet very difficult. Pray for NO LESS than one hour! It takes most of us 15-20 minutes when praying to get past the more shallow mutterings of our heart. After that, you are more able to be REAL with God, to connect more with Him and his Grace! He is amazing, and He loves you dearly! Give Him a chance to give you a better life! If you want to let me know what city/state you live in, I could point you to a great/lively/caring/Christian church there (aaron@gideoncoaching.com).

Is there a local support group for people with RA? If so, you may find friends there. (who will understand how you feel) Continue to go to church, but have you considered trying another church? Is there a singles group in your church? I feel for you. In the past, I have been very lonely for long periods of time, as well. It is so hard. I am sorry that you feel this way. I wish I could help. Continue to pray, and I will pray for you too.

First, know that there are other out there that feel like you: You are not alone.

Second: You have to force yourself to get out there..into the world. Pursue what you are passionate about. Was your son killed in an car accident? Perhaps you can join a group to advocate for stiffer DUI laws. Have you considered a support group...

Have you considered a job change...one that may pay you more and will introduce you to new people? Have you always wanted to learn to do something...ski? paint?

It may be horrible now...it may be suffocating - in time, with baby steps, it will get better. I wish you the best...
