It really depends on what you are looking for in a dog.
Try this site for a dog breed personality/compatibility test, it was very accurate to my needs & put 3 breeds that a truly believe I'm best suited to at the top of my list! It's a program that helps you find the dog breeds that are best for you. It's fun!

I currently have a chocolate lab, a shih tzu, and an English Toy Spaniel. Past childhood & family dogs have included Springer Spaniel (great dog), lab (wonderful), dalmation, pit bull, mom has had dachshunds, queensland heelers. My all-time Favorites: lab, springer spaniel & English Toy Spaniel ... all have great dispositions. Traits I really like in my dogs are loving companionshp, loyalty and intelligence. Traits I prefer not to have in a dog are hyper and yappy ... but we all are looking for different things in our pets. I love our shih tzu, but I'd never make the choice again to have a dog that needs to go to the groomer every 2 months, prefer "lower maintenance" dogs in the grooming area.

I think schnauzers are cute looking (do require professional grooming), they do have terrior type temperments so can be yappy and strong-willed. There is the mini, standard, and giant schnauzer. I used to think I'd like to have a schnauzer, but after meeting a few realized they weren't the right breed for me (my mom, a friend, and a past co-worker all have terriors, a past boss had schnauzers that he showed).

We had a next-door neighbor with a similar breed ... it barked constantly, tried to chew through and dig under the fence to get to our pets, and the owner said it was a difficult dog to train (his words were "couldn't be trained")

Here's a website w/ info on the breed http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/schnauzers.htm
Here's a bit of what it says:
The Standard Schnauzer is a fearless and protective dog. It makes a great watch and guard dog. High-spirited and affectionate, it has a personality of a Terrier. Clever, intelligent, demanding, and playful, Standard Schnauzers need companionship and are good dogs to travel with. This breed has a high learning rate, but can be quite willful and needs firm training. Standard Schnauzers may be very protective and dominant, guarding objects, places and people from other people. They should be socialized well when they are young to prevent over-protectiveness later in life. These energetic dogs need energetic and dominant owners, one who has the ability clearly demonstrate that they are the boss and not the dog. This breed does best with older considerate children.

Are Schnauzers Good Dogs

Schnauzers are very loyal and very smart. They can be trained fairly easily, but you must stick with the discipline until it is clear that they know the expected behavior. If socialized often, Schnauzers are typically great dogs with everyone including children! However, if not socialized often, they become territorial of their owner(s) and domain. To make a really good pet, neutering of the male schnauzer is a must! ALWAYS do extensive research and find multiple breeders/owners who will allow you to interact with a breed you are interested in, but are not yet familiar with.

I agree with everyone here for the most part. I have a 3 yr. old schnauzer, Toby, he is just as everyone says here. He is territorial, protective, barks at the sight of anyone who comes near the place. I am an older female and got him to protect me and my place. He has not failed his duty. I do have him neutered, but, I cannot tell that it has made a difference in him. He is a little more aggressive than I would like, but, he is still young. His coat is silky, not cottony like the grey and white ones. He is totally black, and he does shed, so, not sure where everyone gets the, they do NOT shed idea. Toby does shed, but, his coat is absolutely gorgeous.

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://biturl.im/aU7gI

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Yes - they are loving and sweet and if well bread can live long and joyous lives. My friend used to breed Schnauzers and they are such gentle and caring animals I would highly recommend them as a pet.
